Action Camp Oct 2008

During October half term seven trainees, along with the youth co-ordinator and WCYP Project Manager, took 12 young people to Action Camp in Kiln Park, Tenby.

Action Camp is an ASDAN accredited three day residential camping event for young people introducing them to some of the major issues facing the planet and population in a fun and engaging way.  The camp covered Education for Sustainable Development & Global Citizenship.  The theme was to aid young people in understanding crucial issues facing the planet and to realise the part they can play in helping to shape the future ensuring they are part of the solution and not the problem.

During the stay the young people and workers were split into 5 teams to complete activities relevant to the above them.  Each team was awarded points after each activity.

On the first day the teams took part in an activity to get to know the camp site which involved obtaining answers to various questions.  Then the teams took part in an obstacle course which encouraged team work as the team had to work together to complete the various stages of the course.  There was then a tug of war competition.

On the second day the teams took part in two activities.  In the morning a Fair Trade activity, a beach survival exercise.  Each team was allocated a country, for example, the losing team from the first day was allocated America and had a box full of tools and equipment and the winning team was allocated Africa and had minimum tools and equipment.  The groups had to trade with each other equipment, tools and food to build a shelter and cook a meal.  This taught the young people how unfair the world is and how important citizenship and companionship is.The second activity was the Food Miles activity.  Each team was given £10 and had to shop for ingredients and prepare a meal using the least amount of food miles.  Food miles are calculated according to where the food was from, so the aim of this task was to use as much locally produced food as possible to gain a lower score.  This task really had the young people (and workers) thinking as they had to stay within the budget and prepare a three course meal for their team.
